Before becoming a coach, I knew what it felt like to be overwhelmed and stressed by money. My wife and I were working hard, but it seemed like there was always more month at the end of our paycheck. I felt like I was earning enough to provide for my family, but we never had enough for the life I wanted to give them. It was a constant source of frustration that led to arguments and a feeling of shame. I didn't hide our financial struggles from my wife, but I didn't truly understand them myself, and that lack of knowledge created a constant divide between us.
The wake-up call wasn't a big, dramatic moment—the money fights had become normal for us. The turning point was an answered prayer: my wife opened up to my sister about our struggles, and my sister, who was a Financial Peace University Coordinator, offered to guide us through the program one-on-one. With my wife's faith and my sister’s guidance, we started on a journey to a life of freedom. What resonated most with us was the debt-free approach. We were drowning in debt from credit cards, car payments, and doctor's bills we couldn’t afford to pay. By the second lesson, we had a budget and a plan, and the immense weight on my chest was gone.
My biggest breakthrough, though, was realizing that everything is God’s. I came to understand that I am not the owner of our finances, but a steward put in charge of them. This shift in perspective was transformational and brought a peace I never thought was possible.
My journey has led me, Shawn Tompkins, to a new mission: founding Shepherd's Staff Financial Coaching to guide people who feel the way I used to. I’ve been in that place—overwhelmed with debt, living paycheck to paycheck, and dealing with the strain that money puts on a marriage. I know the shame and the exhaustion, and I know that hope exists for everyone, no matter their circumstances.
My faith guides my coaching, and I believe that God’s love and guidance, as outlined in His love letter to us, hold the keys to a truly prosperous life. My mission is to empower people to find the hope and peace that comes from God with their finances, so they can live a life of freedom and generosity.
